Should We Label Products that Contain Genetically Modified Organisms?
Across the country, most Americans are calling for mandatory labels on genetically modified foods. Although no the FDA does not consider them dangerous, Americans generally want to know what they are consuming. People that want genetically modified foods labeled believe that they could be dangerous and that’s why they should be labeled. Many supports of labeling say that 64 other countries have mandatory labeling and they see no reason why the United States shouldn’t do the same (Colorado State University). Food production companies say that GMOs are not dangerous and labeling them would create unneeded fear in the American public. They believe that a label implies GMOs post a health risk, while no scientific study has proved a direct connection yet. Monsanto also states that costs that come with labeling will be passed along to consumers.
In the end, it is up to consumers to decide what they want in the market place. Although GMOs haven’t been proven dangerous, many customers still have concerns. With the government and many major companies telling us GMOs are safe and beneficial, we have reasons to trust they are good as well. |
